conesus...

hat does conesus even mean, I'm asked regularly enough to find myself defining it at the top of my personal site. It's a name I lovingly took from one of the five finger lakes in upstate New York. Forget the name, it's meaningless. Take a look at what I have to show you.

conesus in california

San Francisco is the city with the loveliest views in the world. Perched on a steep hill between the bay and the ocean, almost everyone has views of the water and the mountains.

But why would I want to spend three months in the Bay City? Because San Francisco is lovely, the climate is warm and sunny and so are the people. You can hum 'I left my heart...' as you land.

I will be posting my thoughts and photos nigh-weekly on my photo-blog. It's called conesus in california.

my photo journey

The most important decision you have to make to get an excellent picture has nothing to do with your camera, your lenses or even your film material. To make a good picture you have to chose the right spot from where to make your picture.

Would it be important for you where you are seated at a Football game, or in a movie theater? Of course. Photography is the same. You have to chose the right spot to get the best picture.

If you would like to take pictures no one else has, then you have to stand where no one else stands. Therefore, before you make your shot, look around and chose your spot.

scheduler jones

Scheduler Jones is a new program designed to create a more user-friendly registration experience for students at Case Western Reserve University. It is a colorful program I wrote to show your schedule visually and to make it simple to decide on which classes to take during the upcoming semester. It also allows you to share your schedule online, for the purposes of sharing it with fellow students.

You can download Scheduler Jones for free at its Case home page.

New York City is a challenging, intellectually-stimulating, kaleidoscopic, ever-changing metropolis. Manhatten has stolen my heart and chewed up my soul. Check out my photos from the real holy land.

And while you're there, if you're feeling sinister, come see my minister. The land of milk and honey, and falafel, schwarma, baklava, baba ganouj, zati, hummus, and other treats.

sesame street, epistemology, and freedom

"Nothing is ever about just one thing." —Lynn Nugent

This essay by Tim Macneil will compare and contrast kindergarten-level and adult-level conceptual abstraction skills, and then will go on to examine some of the political implications of a thinker’s reliance on each mode of reasoning.

These topics are worthy of discussion because, alas, as will be seen, rather more political thinking is done using kindergarten abstraction skills, than is appropriate in a society supposedly intended for free, responsible adults.

To examine these matters, we’ll start on Sesame Street (the children’s TV show), wander through Epistemology (the philosophical science studying what knowledge & abstraction are, exactly), and end discussing Freedom.

We live in a country where John Lennon takes six bullets in the chest. Yoko Ono is standing right next to him. Not one fucking bullet. Explain that to me! Explain that to me!
